MileHighMunchkins is now MileHi-Munchkins !

We have finally received approval and registery of our cattery name through TICA! Due to the name restrictions and rules, we have slightly changed our name from Mile High Muchkins to MileHi-Munchkins (the initial name had too many letters LOL) I am going to change our website slightly as soon as I figure out how to do that haha!

Only 1 kitten left! Absolutely Gorgeous Tortoiseshell!

We have 1 kitten left out of 6 born on 9/29/2012. She is our Non-standard Tortoiseshell, "Tasha" and I have been struggling with whether or not I am going to keep her in our cattery - her coloring is absolutely stunning with deep chocolate browns, swirled with golden apricots, a touch of creams and stunning subtle white eyeliner! She is beautiful! She is offered as a pet for $400 and will ship anywhere in the US at buyer's expense. Please feel free to text me at 303 748 1301! Thanks!

Litter Killed my Kitten!

I want to spread the word about a recent lesson I learned - a very heartbreaking lesson. Forest, the runt of our litter (we called him Forest cuz he walked like Forest Gump lol) was an absolute angel (see attached picture) He was the smallest kitten but had the biggest personality. Anyway, 2 weeks ago, he and the other kittens started acting a little sick so i brought them to the doctor and was told that they had a mild cold and was given a round of antibiotics for them. Within 48 hours everyone was feeling better and improving - except for Forest. He got progressively worse, losing more weight every day, and within 72 hours was unrecognizable as the kitten he was just days earlier. He was lethargic, depressed, and almost zombie like. He would stand to attempt to eat only to fall on his side seconds later and lay there for hours just staring into space with no expression. His breathing became more labored as the minutes passed and I would take him to vet 3 more times within the following 8 days...only to be told that "the runt of the litter is often unable to thrive and his little immune system just could not tackle the cold/infection like his littermates' systems did." Countless sleepless nights, and $900 vet bills later, at 1:30 a.m. this Friday morning, I was trying to feed him through a syringe when he finally stopped fighting and died in my arms. At the very moment of his death, dark red blood poured from his little bottom all over my chest. I knew that was not normal for a kitten who just died from a "cold" and I started researching online to figure out what happened to this poor creature! Within 30 minutes, I found an article that shattered my already broken heart! The article can be found here :
http://www.ny-petrescue.org/clumping.php I did not know that clumping litter (Tidy Cat, Fresh step, etc.) was unsafe for cats and deadly for kittens!! I figured if it is sold at the store, it must be safe right??? WRONG and not even the Vet knew of the dangers until I brought my dead Forest to their office along with the printed article and pointed out every single last symptom my kittens had, and every last symptom that resulted in Forest's death was attributable to his ingesting and breathing in dust from the litter box!!! (I would find him asleep in the litter box sometimes!) Basically, my ignorance killed that little sweetheart and I will do my best to spread the word CLUMPING CLAY LITTER KILLS! Please read the article and if you want to use clumping litter you need to buy the kind made from wheat or corn NOT Clay. Thanks for letting me share! it's my therapy I think :)

Does my Vet know what's Best to Feed my Kitten?

Doesn't my Vet know what's best to feed my kitten?

The shocking answer is "No!"  The fact is Veterinarians did not learn about nutrition in their schooling. They did not learn disease prevention. They did not learn how to keep an animal healthy. What they did learn is how to treat illness and disease. God bless them for that! But what a shame and great disservice to themselves and the millions of pet owners across the country that Nutrition is an ELECTIVE course in veterinary college. And, when chosen, it is a short, few hour course. It is basically useless in teaching our vets how to help us help our pets.
And for those few vets who did take the Nutrition elective -
Guess who supplies the "teaching" material for those rare nutrition classes? If you guessed the pet food industry, you are right! This is another case of the fox guarding the hen house. A lot of heavy marketing aimed at veterinary practices is done to promote unhealthy Iams and Science Diet-type foods.  I'm sure there are several folks nodding their heads "ohhhh that's why my Vet promotes that garbage!"  You got it.  Now I am sure that your vet's intentions are good and that his or her heart is in the right place - he/she simply was not taught any better (or anything in the case of those who elected to not take the Nutrition elective at all) and more than likely, was otherwise "brainwashed" by the so-called "instructors" (which were merely Sales Reps for Iams and/or Science Diet) to believe that those foods were healthy and beneficial for your pet.  Truth, however, is those foods are NOT healthy or beneficial to your pet.

Fact is many cats are allergic to certain things (Persians for example, are likely sensitive or allergic to grain.  Grain can be found in every single bag or can of cat food found at your local grocery store.  It is the cheap filler in most store-bought pet foods.  It is also the cause of countless kidney problems, skin/coat issues, and other common illness in felines and canines as well.  My female munchkin, Nala, erupted in cauliflower shaped sores on her head and neck area - to which I erroneously blamed mites, fleas, or some other bug. I treated that poor cat for everything under the sun, took her the vet's office umpteen times in an attempt to "cure" her from these unsightly wounds.  Nothing helped!  Until I read an article about the wonderful health benefits of a Grain-free diet!  I am not exaggerating when I say that within a week of eliminating grain from her diet - her sores were gone!! 100% vanished! She was a completely different cat!  Happy, rested, bright eyed and beautiful!

Unfortunately, the grain-free cat food is not currently found at your local grocery store and therefore, it is less convenient to the average pet owner, as well as a bit more expensive than your typical store-bought cat food.  However, the extra dollars spent are more than worth it when you see the countless health benefits from offering a Grain-Free diet.  Several brands are available Grain-Free at your local pet food supply store including Blue Buffalo, Wellness, Merrick's Before Grain, AvoDerm, Dick Van Patten, etc.  Please note that not all of the foods offered by these brands are Grain-Free so you must look for the "Grain-Free" indication on the label.  Most certainly, these food brands are healthier than the garbage found at your grocery store even the ones that are not Grain-Free.

Where did the time go?

The kittens are already approaching 8 weeks old!  I can't believe how fast time has flown by!  I also took for granted the amount of time it takes to keep up on a website for these babies!  I keep thinking "I will post pics tomorrow" but "tomorrow" turns into " I meant to post pics last week."  and now here I am and the kittens are almost ready to be weaned! This is not as "easy" as I once had envisioned it to be.  :)

What is a Munchkin? Napoleon?

What is a Munchkin?
A Munchkin is a medium-sized cat with a long body, walnut-shaped eyes and triangular ears. Because of a mutation it has short and stubby legs; this is also the cat's most recognizable feature. The Munchkin, however, is in no way handicapped by its legs and does have regularly-sized forelegs that are equal in length. The cat comes in short-haired and long-haired varieties, both sporting an all-weather coat.

This is a confident and outgoing cat which is not the least bit self conscious about its unusual look. It loves to play and wrestle with its friends, and is frequently dubbed the magpies of the cat species because it often borrows small, shiny objects and stashes them away for later play. The Munchkin also has a hunter’s instinct and will chase mice or anything that moves, but at the end of the day it looks for nothing more than to snuggle into your lap and nag until it is petted.

Napoleons come from crossing the Munchkins to the Persian Breed Group (which includes Persians, Himalayans, and even Exotic Shorthairs)? which results in a cat that looks less like a barn cat and more like the old fashioned doll-faced persian with adorable short legs and some born just as adorable with regular 'normal' sized legs.
Standard = short legs
Non-Standard = normal legs
